During the meeting of the patriarchs of Bartholomew and Cyril there was a strange embarrassment. The guard of Patriarch Kirill did not let him drink the liquid from one of the glasses brought. After such a strange behavior, Bartholomew refused to accept food. All the hierarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate did the same, writes TJournal.

Patriarch Kirill came to Istanbul to negotiate the receipt of autocephaly by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Apparently, the patriarch tried to dissuade the patriarchate from granting autonomy to the Ukrainian church (which, from the point of view of the ROC, is considered divisive). However, Cyril was refused, after which he left Istanbul.

Novaya Gazeta called the incident "a major diplomatic defeat for Russia." Also, the publication reported that the Ecumenical Patriarchate considers illegal the seizure by the Moscow Patriarchate of the Kiev Metropolis at the end of the 17th century.

Recall that at the moment in Ukraine there are two Orthodox patriarchates, Moscow (in fact - a branch of the Russian Orthodox Church) and Kiev. In the case of the Kiev Patriarchate receiving autocephaly, the servants of the Moscow Patriarchate will not be able to accuse competitors of splintering and fictitiousness, and most of the shrines in which the MP is now based will be handed over to the CP.

On April 19, the Verkhovna Rada approved an appeal to Patriarch Bartholomew about providing tomos about autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

Attempts to get autocephaly actually began since Ukraine gained independence. To resolve this issue in the 1991 year, the Ukrainian bishops headed by Filaret (at that time was the head of the UOC-MP) went to Moscow to the Council of Bishops, they write Letters. But in the end, the clergy talks ended in a scandal: the Moscow Patriarchate demanded that Filaret resign, and Ukraine was denied autocephaly.

Nevertheless, Filaret did not lay down his powers, and with the support of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk in 1992, he created the UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate. Since then, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate (UOC-KP) has been functioning in the country, but has not been recognized either by the Patriarchate of Constantinople or the Moscow Patriarchate.

All these years, the Kiev Patriarchate was not canonical. Priests and parishes acted virtually outside the law (at least the ecclesiastical one). And if for the mass of so-called unchurched parishioners, who think in terms of “if only there was a good priest and the church is not far from home,” recognition or non-recognition of the UOC-KP by the patriarchates was indifferent, then for the category of those who observe the canons, this detail was key.

The Ukrainian church, together with the official recognition and status of autocephaly, is very likely to receive a significant bonus in the form of an increasing number of parishes. For this, it is necessary for Constantinople to issue the appropriate tomos (decree). For its part, Ukraine has completed all the necessary procedures.
