You can now apply for asylum in the US online
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on 9 November that some applicants can now apply Form I-589 Application for Asylum and Withholding Deportation Online.
USCIS continues to accept paper version this form by mail.
"The ability to apply for asylum online is part of USCIS' ongoing move to minimize reliance on paper records and move further towards electronic document management," said USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddu.

To apply online, the applicant must first view instructions on the USCIS website to determine if his application can be filed electronically.
Applicants seeking asylum in the USA cannot submit an online form I-589 if they:
- Are in the process of having their case pending in Immigration Court or the Board of Immigration Appeals;
- Are an unaccompanied alien child as defined in 6 USC § 279(g) and are in the process of removal;
- Included in the category of applicants currently required to apply by mail to the Asylum Vetting Center. This category can be found in the "Special Instructions" section on web page with Form I-589;
- Already filed Form I-589, which is still pending with USCIS.
Since the launch of online filing in 2017, the total number of forms submitted electronically has increased significantly. Over 2021 million applications, petitions and requests were filed online in FY 1,21, up 2,3% from the 1,18 million filed in FY 2020.
To file Form I-589 online, you must first create USCIS online account, which provides a convenient and secure way to submit forms and track the status of an immigration request. The account is free and offers many features, including the ability to communicate with USCIS about an application.
