Nearly half of families in the United States cannot afford rent and food.
43% or nearly 51 million US households do not earn enough to afford to spend monthly on rent, housing, childcare, healthcare, transportation, and mobile communications. This is evidenced by data from a research project of the United Way ALICE, writes CNN Money.
This includes 16, 1 million families living in poverty, and 34,7 million families who earn enough to “survive in the modern economy.”
“Despite the seemingly positive economic signs, ALICE data shows that financial hardship remains a widespread problem,” says project director Stephanie Hules.
The largest number of needy families live in California, New Mexico and Hawaii - by 49%. The lowest rate recorded in North Dakota.
Most of the people who lack livelihood work on caring for children, housekeepers, store clerks, office managers and working in low-paying jobs. About 60% of US jobs are paid for less than 20 dollars per hour.
The study says that, for example, in King's Seattle County, the annual budget required for the survival of a family of 4 people in the 2016 year was $ 85 thousand. To do this, the hourly wage must be $ 42,46. But in Washington state only 14% of jobs are paid more than $ 40 per hour.
