Almost half of Joe Biden's Twitter followers are fake: Elon Musk's situation is even worse

According to Newsweek, an audit conducted for the social media giant by software company SparkToro found that 49,3% of the president's followers are "fake".

SparkToro has defined "fake followers" as "accounts that are not available and will not see tweets".

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is trying to buy Twitter, has expressed concern about the growing number of fake accounts and has suggested crackdowns on them.

Musk said he believes 20% of all Twitter accounts are fake and vowed not to make a $44 billion purchase of the social media giant until the issue is resolved.

SparkToro conducted the same audit on Musk himself and found that nearly 70,2% of Musk's 93,3 million Twitter followers were fake.

In an analysis of Musk's nearly 100 million followers, it was found that 73% have spam-related keywords in their profiles and 71% use locations that don't match any known place name. Business Insider.

41% of these accounts use display names that match spam patterns. Notably, 69% are also inactive for more than 120 days.

The research teams indicated that 83% of Musk's followers have a "suspiciously low number of followers" and 78% follow "an unusually low number of accounts."

SparkToro's analysis says that some of the "fake accounts" as the company defines them are not always problematic, such as bots that tweet news or those that tweet pictures and links around the world.

The researchers said most of the flagged spam accounts are guilty of propaganda and misinformation, phishing or malware attempts, manipulation of stocks and cryptocurrencies, and attempts to harass other users.

The company noted that the analysis may underestimate active users who do not tweet anything, but scroll the feed.

However, the researchers said their analysis relies on a "conservative" assessment of what a fake or spam account is.

SparkToro and Followerwonk estimate that around 19,42% of all active Twitter accounts are likely spam or fake, based on a sample of 44 random accounts.

Both groups said it's not unusual for well-known or large Twitter accounts like Musk's to have large numbers of fake followers.
