Nearly 95%: Another company says its COVID-19 vaccine is effective

Biotech company Moderna said on Monday November 16 that a preliminary analysis of the third phase of trials shows a 19% effectiveness of the COVID-94,5 vaccine. This marks the second breakthrough in vaccine testing in weeks. The details were told by the building NBC News.

A week ago, the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer released preliminary results of the analysis, based on which it can be argued that its the vaccine is more than 90% effective.

Moderna also said its vaccine does not require ultra-cold storage, unlike Pfizer's vaccine, which must be stored at minus 70 degrees Celsius or below, which removes the problem of spreading the vaccine to billions of people around the world.

Professor Trudy Lange, director of the University of Oxford's Global Health Network, called Moderna's announcement "very good news indeed."

The company said the Phase 3 trial involved more than 30 people in the United States, including races over the age of 000.

“These early results suggest that the protected group will include a range of ages and races,” Lang said. “This is truly encouraging and further demonstrates that a COVID-19 vaccine is a real possibility and that having more than one supplier should help ensure better and more equitable global availability.”

The announcement raises high hopes for an end to the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed more than 1,3 million lives worldwide and sparked the global economic crisis.

“I think this is a really big step forward in what we want to do to get this outbreak under control,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, calling the vaccine data “very impressive.”

The company said the analysis did not reveal any major safety issues and the vaccine was generally well tolerated by the subjects.

95 participants in the trial received a placebo or vaccine. Of those who received the vaccine, only five became infected.

Moderna said its vaccine is expected to remain stable at a standard refrigerator temperature of 2 to 8 degrees Celsius for 30 days, up from a previous estimate of 7 days. According to the company, the vaccine can remain stable at -20 degrees Celsius for up to six months and at room temperature for 24 hours.

“These are temperatures typically found in easily accessible pharmaceutical freezers and refrigerators that would allow for easier vaccine distribution in the U.S. and other parts of the world,” the company said in a statement.

Fauci predicted that vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer would be available by the end of December for people "in the high-risk category."

But he warned that the fact that a vaccine is in the final stages should double down on public health measures, including masking and social distancing.

Moderna plans to apply for an emergency vaccine authorization application with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the coming weeks.

By the end of the year, 20 million doses of the vaccine are expected to be ready for shipment to the United States, with between 500 million and 1 billion produced next year.
