Nearly 13 Millions of Americans Applied for Obamacare
Nearly 13 millions of US citizens have applied for health insurance for 2016 for the year whose deadline expired on January 31.
This year, fines for failure to comply with the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, will more than double, from $285 to $695.
In total, a million more people registered for 4 compared to 2015 a year.
Of 9,6, one million people have applied through the US Department of Health website HealthCare.gov, about 42% first joined the program.
“Happy to report such success [of the Affordable Care Program],” the Health Secretary said Sylvia Matthews-Barwell.
She also added that among the “newcomers” to Obamacare are 2,7 million citizens aged 18 to 34, significantly more young people compared to 2015.
Supporters of the law expected a surge in applications immediately after the New Year, but about 700 thousand people registered only in the last week of January.
