Nearly 100 restaurant diners in Illinois contract norovirus

Arby's restaurant closed for the second time in less than a month due to an outbreak of foodborne illness among its customers. Health officials say the disease is caused by norovirus, which is notoriously difficult to eradicate. Writes about it Food Safety News.

Over 90 people reported feeling sick after eating at Arby's in Springfield, Illinois. The first illnesses were reported in mid-February, which led to the temporary closure of the restaurant.

A Sangamon County Health Department official has confirmed that the restaurant in Dirksen Parkway in Springfield has temporarily closed for the second time. The department recommended deep cleaning and employee training to the establishment. Officials made similar recommendations during the first closure in late February.

Sangamon County restaurant inspection records indicate that the initial complaint against Arby's was received and investigated on 23 February. The Inspectors will conduct four additional spot checks in response to this complaint.

County records show a temperature violation was found on February 24 for sauces. According to the inspection protocol, the restaurant staff decided to move the sauce warehouse to a suitable location. The establishment opened less than a week after the first incident.

About norovirus infections

Norovirus causes inflammation in the stomach or intestines. This is called acute gastroenteritis, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In humans, symptoms usually appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure to norovirus. Most people with norovirus disease recover within 1-3 days.

People infected with norovirus feel very bad, they have severe vomiting and multiple diarrhea during the day. This can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, the elderly, and those who already have other medical conditions.
