WHO: mass wearing masks does not save from coronavirus and may even harm
The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to insist on its recommendation not to wear masks unless you are sick or care for a patient COVID-19, writes CNN.
On Monday, March 30, representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that they continue to recommend that people do not wear masks if they are not sick with Covid-19 or are not caring for the patient.
“There is no concrete evidence that mass mask wearing by the population has any potential benefit. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest the opposite. Using a mask incorrectly or not fitting it properly on the face can cause harm,” Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO's health emergencies program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland.

“There is also the issue that we have a huge global shortage,” Ryan said of masks and other medical supplies. “Currently, the people most at risk from this virus are healthcare workers, who are exposed to the virus every second of every day.” The thought of them not having masks is terrifying.”
Dr. Maria Van Kerchove, an epidemiologist for infectious diseases at WHO, also said at a briefing that “masks are a priority for those who need it most,” referring to health workers.
“Among the general public, we do not recommend using masks unless you are sick yourself. A mask should be used as a measure to prevent you from spreading infection further if you are sick,” Van Kerkhove said.
“We recommend the use of masks for people who are sick and for those caring for sick people at home,” she said.
Representatives of the World Health Organization have warned that there is a “significant shortage” of medical supplies around the world, including personal protective equipment and masks for doctors.

“We need to clarify the situation,” Van Kerkhove said. “The world is facing significant shortages of personal protective equipment for our frontline workers, including masks, gloves, gowns and face shields, and protecting our healthcare workers must be a top priority when using these supplies.”
