America is among the ten most dangerous for women of the country.

Seven years ago, a Thomson Reuters Foundation survey of experts named the five most dangerous countries for women: Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India and Somalia. This year we decided to see if the situation had changed. The survey was expanded to 10 countries - and the United States unexpectedly appeared in the ranking, becoming the only Western country to make the list.

Three years ago, world leaders swore to eradicate all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls for the 2030 year, which will allow them to live freely and safely, fully and equitably participate in political, economic and social life, writes poll2018.trust.org.

But despite this promise, every third woman in the world is subject to physical or sexual abuse during her lifetime. Almost 750 of millions of women and girls were married before the 18 anniversary, which leads to teenage pregnancy and endangers their health, limits the possibility of getting an education.

Six key parameters by which countries were assessed:

• health;
• discrimination;
• cultural traditions;
• sexual abuse;
• other types of violence;
• human trafficking.

The criteria were taken into account individually and in total: the more risk scores a country received in the surveys, the higher its overall ranking in the list. For example, the leader, India, came out on top because it ranked among the ten worst countries in the world for every single criterion. The total brought her to the top of the list.

States ranked 10-th place in terms of danger for women, becoming the only Western country, which appeared in the top ten. By most parameters, the States were not included in the TOP, but were in the 3-th place in the world for sexual violence and on the 6-m for other types of violence.

Here is the ten most dangerous countries in the world (in descending risk):

1. India;
2. Afghanistan;
3. Syria;
4. Somalia;
5. Saudi Arabia;
6. Pakistan;
7. Democratic Republic of Congo;
8. Yemen;
9. Nigeria;
10. USA.

US Foundation Summary:

The United States moved up the rankings this year to third place, tied with Syria. The criteria that led the country to this position were the high risk of sexual violence, including harassment, rape, forced intimate contact and lack of access to justice in cases of rape. The United States also took sixth place for other types of violence - domestic, physical, mental, and related to conflict situations.

The survey was conducted after the #MeToo anti-harassment campaign went viral last October, when Harvey Weinstein, a Hollywood film mogul, was accused of harassing more 70 women. Since then, hundreds of American women have publicly blamed influential men in business, government and show business, and thousands of them have joined the #MeToo movement in social networks, where they told their own stories.
