Why US elections are held on the first Tuesday of November
Have you ever wondered why the US general elections are held on the first Tuesday of November?
This was not always the case. In the first 15 presidential election, each state established its own voting day, but then the development of communications caused fears that the earlier voting states would affect those that vote later.
Therefore, in 1845, Congress chose one day for everyone: the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.
Why is tuesday? The roads were bad or not at all. Often it was necessary to get to the polling station all day. The congress decided that citizens should not start the journey on Sunday, Christians have a day off, and they can go on a trip on Monday.
Why November? Most Americans were farmers. Harvesting has already ended, and the time of bad weather has not yet come.
These days, the roads are good, and not so many Americans are employed in agriculture.
Although there were proposals to hold national elections on Saturday, the United States continues to vote on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November.
This year, too, elections will take place, according to tradition, on November 3.
