Why are sweet cherry trees in California gardens cleaned once or twice a year in 5
In the cherry orchard, everything is subject to a reasonable approach to business.
YouTube channel Eastfruit posted a report from the garden of sweet cherries in California, which has not been harvested for two years. Cherry berries remained hanging on the trees. Causes - natural disasters.
In 2018, almost the entire harvest died from spring frosts, and in 2019, heavy rains started during harvesting, which completely ruined the sweet cherry crop - the fruit simply burst and became unsuitable for sale. Therefore, the farmer decided not to clean the cherries at all.
“We sometimes harvest berries once every five years, and sometimes twice every five years, because growing cherries in California without shelter is roulette; too often during the harvesting period it rains and the berries crack. However, growing cherries is a profitable business for us, because in those years when the weather destroys our crops, the government comes to the rescue, which has developed a very convenient insurance system. I always buy the maximum insurance against loss of the cherry crop, so I receive income regardless of whether I harvest the berries or not,” the California gardener explained in comments to EastFruit.

It is also interesting to note that in this garden everything is subordinated to a reasonable approach to business. In particular, the pruning of trees is done only with a contour cutter - immediately vertically, and then horizontally - in height. Do it in the summer. Additionally, chainsaw workers cut very large branches growing inside the tree in order to maximize the access of sunlight inside the crown. Small shoots are left, as it protects the trunk of a tree from damage by the rays of the aggressive California sun.
The farmer admitted that he is trying to reduce the height of the trees every year by installing the contour cutter lower and lower. The reason is that harvesting, taking into account the safety requirements for workers, is a very serious challenge. Each worker is obliged to move his ladder from tree to tree, while the state regulates the size of the stairs, which should not be above certain limits, in order to avoid serious injuries in the event of a fall. Accordingly, if the tree is too tall, then the employee simply will not be able to reach the berries.
