On September 30, 2020, the deadline has expired during which the winners of the DV-2020 green card lottery could obtain visas and the right to immigrate to the United States. As ForumDaily wrote on June 22, 2020, US President Donald Trump extended the ban on issuing green cards until December 31 and some categories of work visas. The winners of the DV-2020 green card lottery were also banned, which effectively deprived them of the opportunity to immigrate to the United States.

By a court decision of this category of applicants for the green card again allowed to apply for a visa... On September 4, US District Judge Amit Mehta temporarily banned the federal government from enforcing a visa ban for the winners of the DV-2020 green card lottery and their relatives, which did not leave them a chance to obtain their visas before the September 30, 2020 deadline.

Mehta ordered the Trump administration to make a "good faith effort" to "process and review" these applications promptly by the deadline, that is, by the end of the US fiscal year.

Otherwise, the judge (appointed by Obama and took office in 2014) supported the president's decision to block entry into the United States for holders of temporary work visas, green card applicants and others.

Court orders will continue to prevent lottery winners from entering the United States until the end of the year, but will not prevent the State Department from issuing visas to them.

The problem was not completely resolved: due to delays in the work of the immigration service, most potential immigrants did not receive visas, even having prepared the necessary documents on time. They simply did not have time to accept the applicants. Immigration lawyer Curtis Morrison told the Miami Herald that so far the Department of State has issued only 14 of the 636 visas allocated for the 55 fiscal year.

The court met the immigrants halfway here too - it ordered the State Department to issue another 9095 visas.

“Judge Mehta has ordered the State Department to reserve 9095 DV-2020 visa numbers after September 30, 2020, which he estimates means that after all is said and done, about half the normal number of annual DV visas will be issued,” Morrison said.

This means that those who have not yet received a visa have more time to remove obstacles to immigration.
