Legionnaires' disease, also called Legionnaires' disease or Pittsburgh pneumonia, is an acute infectious disease caused by various types of microorganisms belonging to the genus Legionella.

Most healthy people exposed to legionella do not get sick. But in immunocompromised individuals, fever, cough, chills, or muscle aches usually develop due to bacteria. Symptoms usually appear within 2-10 days after exposure to bacteria.

Most patients recover after a course of antibiotic treatment, about 10% die due to complications from the disease.

Bacteria that cause legionary disease can be found in freshwater bodies of water, water supply systems, ornamental fountains, etc.

In 2011, a man who lived at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas died after being infected with Legionnaire’s disease.

The name of the disease - “Legionnaires' disease” - is associated with the American Legion, an organization founded in 1919 and uniting Americans who participated in various wars, the portal writes Health.

It was at the congress of this public organization in 1976, held in the city of Philadelphia, that an outbreak of severe respiratory disease broke out. Within a month, the disease claimed the lives of 34 from 220 diseased delegates. Although outbreaks of a similar infection have been observed previously, the isolated pathogen was named Legionella pneumophila (causing pneumonia). Other species of the genus Legionella cause various diseases of the respiratory system, similar in clinic to legionnaire's disease and combined by the term “legionellosis”.
