Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat announced the intention to appropriate the area near the US Embassy in Jerusalem the official name of “The United States Square in honor of President Donald Trump”.

The official event is the assignment of the area of ​​the new name with the participation of US officials in the near future, reports The Jerusalem Post.

“In this way, Jerusalem responds to the love of the President and the people of the United States, who stand on the side of the State of Israel. President Trump decided to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people, stand on the side of historical truth and do the right thing,” Barkat commented on his decision.

Last year, the Jerusalem Naming Committee gave permission to assign a new name to the square located at the intersection of David Flusser and Kfar Etzion streets.

Recall that in Jerusalem 7 May, a week before the opening of the American embassy in the city, installed road signs with the inscription "US Embassy". The signs were installed in three languages: English, Arabic and Hebrew.

The opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem is scheduled for 14 May. US delegation The event will be headed by Undersecretary of State John Sullivan. The delegation will also include the US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman; US Secretary of the Treasury Stimen Mnuchin; Assistant to the President and Special Representative for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, as well as President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump.
