Pittsburgh: a city of bridges and hills

In Pittsburgh, we hit by chance. We came here to visit the Rolling Stones concert and at the same time see the second largest city in Pennsylvania, USA. As it turned out, he is not so big. The population is only 300 thousand people. In a whisper: it is even smaller than my native Nikolaev.

Walking around the city, you can immediately see the imprint that Europeans left on it. And it doesn’t even matter who exactly - the French or the British, who pushed each other out of these places. But the 18th century houses are immediately visible - and they are stunning. The most interesting thing is that the name of the city of Pittsburgh comes from Fort Pitt, which was built by the British. And they named it in honor of the Prime Minister of England at that time.

Personally, I determined for myself that Pittsburgh consists of 2 parts. One of which is the very old houses that are located on the hill. And the second is the city center called the “Golden Triangle”, where the skyscrapers are located - just like in New York. And this name was given to the city center for a reason. Look at the photo and you will see that this is a real triangle. On one side it flows the Allegheny River, and on the other the Monongahela River, which together form the Ohio River.

This is a beautiful view from the Duken funicular, which was opened in 1877, and is the oldest operating in the United States.

Now he has an exclusively tourist destination. Climbing up on the funicular, in addition to the beautiful view, you can still look at all the mechanisms of working transport.

Generally Pittsburgh is a hilly city. You start to feel it even on the track when you approach it. Of course, this is not the Crimean serpentine, but it lays down the ears and turns quite a lot. It is also a city of bridges. In the USA, there are simply no competitors for it.

We had half a day of time, so we didn’t have time to see much, but we still got somewhere. Our next stop was the Carnegie Museum of Science. In it you can see a large number of experiments that scientists performed, as well as all kinds of instructive stands. For example, there we saw how waves are formed, how to calculate electricity for certain devices, how to load a ship so that it does not capsize in the sea, and much more.

We studied robots there, and even played air hockey with one of them. Yes, yes, the robot won against us in a matter of minutes.

Near the museum is a submarine, which we simply could not ignore.

This was the second time in my life when I went down to the submarine. The first time I did it in Sevastopol. I could never understand how people can be in such a confined space for a large amount of time.

There is a lot of space and there is almost all the amenities. But still, one understanding of the fact that you are under water and you can’t just take a breath of fresh air is puzzling.

This submarine was created for military purposes, and there we looked at torpedoes. It was very interesting, but for a long time I couldn’t be there. Still, I'm a man of freedom. I'd rather lie on the lawn.

Finally, we rode around Pittsburgh County and drove back to Washington. I really liked this city, I would like to know it better.

Maybe we will go there again for some concert. ?
