Trump was sent a package with deadly poison to the White House: what is known about the suspect

Police arrested a woman suspected of sending a package containing the deadly poison ricin to US President Donald Trump. Writes about it with the BBC.

The detention took place in the city of Buffalo (New York) on the Canadian border. The woman's name has not yet been revealed.

As reported by the New York Times, she is a Canadian civilian and was detained at a border crossing while trying to enter the United States. Firearms were seized from her.

According to the publication, in March 2019, a woman was detained in Texas for illegal stay in the United States and deported to her homeland. She was then found with a fake driver's license, an expired six-month visa and a firearm.

The suspicious package was discovered on September 19 while sorting correspondence addressed to the President of the United States. For security reasons, the procedure is being carried out outside the White House.

All mail destined for the head of state is checked and sorted at a remote facility before reaching the White House. After the discovery of the dangerous package, two tests were carried out to confirm the presence of ricin in it. Now the Secret Service and the FBI are investigating this case, writes RBC.

American media reported that the package came from Canada.

It is also reported that several more cases of such packages being transferred to Texas are being investigated, and they may be associated with the same sender, writes "Ukrainian Truth".

Public Security Canada spokeswoman Mary-Liz Power said Canada is aware of the parcels and is already investigating.

“Canadian law enforcement officers work closely with their American counterparts. Because the investigation is active, we cannot provide other details at this time,” she said.

What is ricin

Ricin is a poison that can take several different physical forms, but as a refined powder, this substance can be deadly. It is also one of the easiest poisons to produce.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ricin in powder form can be used as a weapon that can cause death in certain circumstances. The Centers noted that the distribution of this powder is deliberate, unintentional or accidental poisoning with them is impossible except for the occasional use of castor beans.

There is no antidote for ricin. If a person inhales or swallows it, death occurs within 36-72 hours, depending on the dose received. A half-milligram dose of this substance the size of a pinhead is enough to kill an adult.

“Ricin poisoning is not contagious. Ricin-related disease cannot be spread from person to person through casual contact. However, if you come into contact with a person who has ricin on their body or clothing, you may become subject to the poison, ”the CDC said.

Ricin is extracted from the fruit of the castor bean, a widespread plant that looks like a palm tree, more precisely, from the waste of their processing into castor oil. Damaged seeds are dangerous to humans if swallowed.

Other similar cases

In 2014, a man in the US state of Mississippi was sentenced to 25 years in prison for sending parcels of ricin to President Barack Obama and other officials.

In 2018, a retired naval sailor was charged with sending parcels of castor bean seeds (also known as castor beans) containing ricin to Defense Secretary James Mattis and US Navy Commander Admiral John Richardson.

In 2001, instructions for the production of ricin were found at the destroyed base of the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda (banned in Russia and other countries of the world) in Kabul.

The most famous case of ricin use was the murder of Bulgarian dissident and BBC World Service employee Georgiy Markov. He was poisoned on September 11, 1978 in London by injection with a specially designed umbrella containing a mini-air gun that fired a tiny capsule of ricin. The weapon was developed in a KGB laboratory and provided by it to the intelligence services of communist Bulgaria.
