The pilot of the plane burned down in Sheremetyevo was charged: he does not admit his guilt

The Investigative Committee of Russia (ICR) has charged Denis Evdokimov, the crew commander of the Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet 100, in connection with the crash at Sheremetyevo Airport that occurred in May 2019. Writes about this with the BBC.

The crash of a Superjet 100, owned by Aeroflot, occurred at Sheremetyevo on May 5. The plane, flying from Moscow to Murmansk, urgently returned to the airport and, having made a hard landing, caught fire. As a result, 41 people out of 78 on board died.

“The investigation continues, Denis Evdokimov has been charged. “Aeroflot is providing all possible assistance to the investigative authorities conducting the investigation,” the airline’s press service said.

The aircraft commander Evdokimov is accused of a crime under Part 3 Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of the safety rules for the movement and operation of air transport, which, through negligence, caused serious harm to human health, the death of two or more persons).

After the disaster, the TFR opened a criminal case under this article; it provides for a punishment of imprisonment for a term of three to seven years.

Evdokimov is on his own recognizance not to accept guilt, his lawyer Natalya Mitusova said.

A source close to Yevdovkimov’s defense announced a request to conduct an additional examination of the combustibility of the design of the landing gear mount and the materials of the aircraft cabin. In addition, it is planned to check the electro-remote control systems of the aircraft, he said.

IAC version

In June, the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) published a preliminary report on the crash.

From the report it followed that on the crashed liner damage was found that was characteristic of traces of lightning. After a lightning strike, the autopilot disconnected and the aircraft systems switched to manual control.

Despite communication problems and the loss of automatic control, the aircraft commander assessed the situation as regular, the report said.

The IAC report did not contain direct indications of pilot errors as the causes of the accident.

Version of Evdokimov

The crew commander, Evdokimov, who was quoted by the Baza project on the day of the disaster, explained that lightning had preceded the loss of radio communications and the failure of electronics. It also followed from his story that the cause of the fire could be a hard landing with a landing mass exceeded due to full fuel tanks.

Evdokimov could not explain why the board hit the ground several times during landing. He argued that “the speed was sufficient” and “the runway was approached with a decrease in vertical speed according to procedure.”

“Our client is charged with a violation during landing, namely improper control of the aircraft’s control stick during landing. The defense presented arguments to the investigation about the aircraft’s incorrect response to the controls,” said Mitusova’s lawyer.

“According to the prosecution, there really was a lightning strike on the plane, the plane was in manual control mode, it was an emergency,” the lawyer added. “Without a detailed study of the examinations, it is difficult to say anything for sure at the moment.”

The IAC report stated that during landing the crew began to impulsively move the side control stick to different positions. Subsequently, the pilot-in-command's control actions on the pitch stick, increasing in amplitude, were recorded - up to a full stroke, both "pull" and "pull" with a relatively long hold in extreme positions.

TFR previously reported that it is considering several versions of the incident, including pilot error, aircraft malfunction, and adverse weather conditions.

Media Versions

Media publications were dominated by two possible versions of the disaster - the erroneous actions of the pilots and the defects of the Sukhoi Superjet 100 aircraft.

In mid-May, the Kommersant newspaper, citing a source close to the investigation, wrote that the crew could have overshot the estimated landing point, and then at high speed began to press the plane to the ground, sharply lowering its nose.

A little later, RIA Novosti, citing a document from the Federal Air Transport Agency, reported that during the approach to land, the crew of the plane, contrary to instructions, allegedly did not raise the spoilers - flaps on the upper plane of the wing.

At the end of May, Kommersant reported that the Association of Air Transport Operators wrote a letter to the Ministry of Transport with a request to check the Superjet 100 for compliance with certification requirements. In particular, the association allegedly had questions about the aircraft's static electricity protection system and its effectiveness.

At the end of August, Advisor to the General Director of the United Aircraft Corporation, Boris Aleshin, accused Aeroflot of discrediting the Sukhoi Superjet 100. “There should be no unilateral discussion - when the disaster happened, and suddenly Aeroflot told the whole world that the plane was rubbish and crap, in Russian, and it’s all the plane’s fault,” Aleshin was indignant.

Aeroflot did not officially comment on the causes of the crash, calling on the media to refrain from drawing conclusions until the results of the investigation conducted by the IAC commission.
