Aeroflot pilot dies of heart attack during flight: why people die on airplanes

The co-pilot of a passenger plane, which took off on the morning of November 24 from the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport in Anapa, died after an emergency landing of the airliner in Rostov-on-Don, writes RBC.

“About 10 a.m., the co-pilot became ill, an emergency landing was requested, and while they were landing, the pilot, born in 1970, died,” said a source in the region’s emergency services. “According to preliminary data, the cause of death was a heart attack.”

According to the online scoreboard on the Sheremetyevo website, the Aeroflot plane flew to Anapa in 08: 20 Moscow time, during the flight it was redirected to Rostov-on-Don.

The press service of RBC Airlines reported that after the well-being of the co-pilot worsened, the liner commander decided to make an emergency landing in Rostov-on-Don.

“An ambulance was called to the plane, the pilot was handed over to the doctors,” Aeroflot said. However, the man could not be saved, he died in an ambulance. According to Fox News, death occurred during the landing, and not after it. The company expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased. After refueling, the plane flew to Anapa.

The representative of the air carrier told RBC that before the flight, the pilot underwent a mandatory physical examination, the doctors found no health problems.

These are mainly cardiovascular pathologies, ”the source said.

According to the expert, before departure people with certain diseases should definitely consult with a specialist. Doctors can prohibit the flight for those who suffer from high intracranial pressure, respiratory tract diseases, deep vein thrombosis of the legs and injuries of the middle or inner ear. A serious reason not to go on a trip are recently experienced strokes and heart attacks, as well as psychiatric illnesses.

Additional consultations with doctors immediately before departure are also required for those with diabetes mellitus, problems with blood coagulation and other chronic diseases of vital organs. At the same time, a passenger is definitely not worth counting on full-fledged medical care during the flight.

“Flight attendants should provide first aid. Nevertheless, they will not be able to provide any effective help except to give a pill and water. Only a specialist accidentally on board can save the situation - otherwise, it remains to wait for an emergency landing, ”the source said.
