The first-ever all-electric Ferrari sold at auction for a record $40 million.

Ferrari's first all-electric car sold for $40 million at a charity auction. This is a record price for a new car sold at public auction, reports Air force.

RM Sotheby's California auction fetched more than 35 times the Ferrari Luce's typical price. The auction house noted that the "first production chassis" featured unique styling and bespoke components.

The Luce, designed with iPhone designer Sir Jony Ive, sparked a backlash after its May debut, with some commentators claiming it departed from the brand's traditional design and lost some of its identity due to its electric powertrain and five-seat layout.

Sotheby's said all proceeds from the sale will go to the Ferrari Foundation's educational programs.

The identity of the buyer of the custom-made Luce has not been disclosed. The BBC has contacted the auction house and Ferrari for further information.

The Luce's debut was one of the most high-profile automotive launches of recent years and Ferrari's first foray into the electric vehicle market, a segment dominated by Elon Musk's Tesla and Chinese automakers.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Leo were invited to the unveiling of the luxury brand's new car.

The Luce sold is a special edition white version of the electric car.

However, the very next day after the premiere, Ferrari shares fell due to criticism of the model.

Critics included Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and former Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who said the car "risked destroying a legend."

Ferrari design director Flavio Manzoni said in an interview in May that criticism is part of the innovation process and expressed confidence that the public will appreciate the Luce over time.

The company does not disclose Luce sales targets, but the Financial Times reports that the annual plan has already been met thanks to strong demand in China.

Ferrari did not respond to the BBC's request for comment.

Sotheby's said the car up for auction was a "unique opportunity" to acquire the first production Luce.

The car is equipped with special wheels, modified brakes and is finished in white.

Sotheby's said the charity sale was "a clear expression of innovation and responsibility for future generations."

Ferrari cars traditionally sell for the most at auctions.

In 2025, a custom-built Ferrari Daytona SP3 supercar was sold for $26 million to benefit the company's educational initiatives. At the time, this set a record price for a new car at auction.

However, the absolute record price at auction still belongs to the extremely rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé, which sold in 2022 for $142 million.
