The first case of interspecies communication: scientists managed to talk with whales

Researchers from the SETI Institute report what may be the first conversation with whales in their native language. SETI scientists are studying interspecies communication to learn how we might someday interact with the most intelligent creatures since humans. Writes about this Boing Boing.

The conversation between a man and a whale took place in a feeding area off the coast of Alaska.

“We believe this is the first such communication exchange between humans and humpback whales in the ‘language’ of whales,” says UC Davis behaviorist Brenda McCowan, who collaborated with the SETI team on this work.

“In response to a recorded “contact” signal sounded at sea through an underwater speaker, a humpback whale named Twain approached the team’s boat and circled it, responding in a conversational style to the whale’s “hello call.” During the 20-minute conversation, Twain responded to each signal played and adjusted the intervals between them,” SETI said.

Similar to the study of Antarctica as an analogue to Mars, the Whale-SETI team is exploring intelligent terrestrial non-human communication systems to develop filters to apply to any extraterrestrial signals received. The mathematics of information theory will be used to quantify communicative complexity (for example, the structure of rules embedded in the received message).
