Nordstrom's flagship store in San Francisco, California, has officially closed with Aug. 27 being its last day in business. He worked downtown for 35 years. Writes about this ABC7.
Nordstrom opened on the corner of 5th and Market Streets in October 1988. The store occupied an impressive area of 312 square meters. feet (28 sq. m) five floors of the San Francisco Center shopping center.
“Sad day. It was a wonderful store. It served as the anchor center of San Francisco,” said Julie, a San Francisco resident.
Julie was one of the first customers to walk up the signature spiral escalator on August 27 on Nordstrom's last day at the San Francisco Center.
Leslie Simmons and her daughter had not heard of the news.
“I didn’t know that today was the last day. I’m really glad that we were suddenly here to walk through the store one last time,” Simmons said.
The once bustling retail outlet is now desolate, with many empty storefronts.
"As a San Francisco native, it's depressing to see downtown disappearing," said Denise Alexander of Oakland.
In May, Nordstrom announced it was closing the store due to falling sales. Employees said they weren't surprised.
“This is certainly partly due to crime in the area. COVID-19 has also had a big impact,” noted one Nordstrom employee.
This flagship store opened in 1988, which was a big deal at the time.
ABC7 News attended Nordstrom's grand opening, which drew 60 shoppers on its first day.
Alexander remembers this event well.
“We walked up the escalator and rejoiced at this event,” he admitted.
