Passenger aircraft accidentally exceeded the speed of sound

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner passengers, February 19 flying from Los Angeles to London, were extremely lucky: their plane arrived at Heathrow 48 minutes earlier, hitting the air flow over the state of Pennsylvania and temporarily exceeding the speed of sound.

It clarifies The Washington Post, such airflows usually occur at such a height when the pressure 250 millibar. If the plane enters the jet stream, then depending on the direction it will either slow down or accelerate. Virgin Atlantic liner, fortunately, was on the way with natural airflow. Peter James, the captain of the ship, who performed this flight, wrote on Twitter that he had never experienced a similar experience during his 25-year career.

“Almost 800 miles per hour, never seen such a fair wind in life! (tailwind - 200 miles per hour), ”James shared his impressions.

The cruising speed of this aircraft is 561 mile per hour (902 km / h), but the jet wind dispersed the airliner to 1285 km / h, allowing it to exceed the speed of sound that is 1234 km / h. It is worth adding that the passenger plane was lucky: getting into a high-altitude jet stream can be dangerous due to strong turbulence.
