Passenger aircraft with 66 people aboard crashed in Iran

ATR 72-500 passenger aircraft of Iranian airline Aseman Airlines crashed in the mountainous terrain of central Iran; according to preliminary data, all 66 people aboard died.

The airliner was flying on the route Tehran - Yasuj, writes with the BBC.

The plane fell on the mountain of Dena, in 22 km from Yasuj. On board were sixty passengers, including one child, two guards, two flight attendants, a pilot and a co-pilot.

Initially, the airline stated that they all died, but clarified: “Given the special conditions in the region (mountainous terrain), we still do not have access to the crash site, and therefore we can’t accurately and definitively confirm the death of all passengers aboard aircraft ”.

Rescue work complicates mountainous terrain and bad weather, due to which a helicopter can get to the scene of the incident. Rescuers have to get there by land transport.

In recent years, several major aviation accidents have occurred in Iran, among the reasons for this are the country's aging fleet. Iran could not acquire new aircraft or parts for old aircraft because of the sanctions imposed by the United States.

In 2015, most of the sanctions were lifted.

Soon after it Aseman - Iran's third largest airline - signed a contract with Boeing for the purchase of the latest 30 models Boeing 737.

According to the Iranian civil aviation organization, the crashed ATR 72-500 aircraft manufactured by the French-Italian factory has been in use for 25 years.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei expressed "deep sympathy" for the relatives of the victims.

Recall, just a week before that, February 11, crashed plane AN-148 "Saratov Airlines", on board was a 71 man, they all died. The crash occurred in the Ramensky district of Moscow region.
