Eggs are a staple of Easter celebrations. But with prices still high in the U.S., many Americans are looking for alternatives to some of their favorite traditions. Instead, they're dyeing potatoes, reports CBS.

Alternative methods
One popular TikTok video by The Spruce offers five alternatives to dyeing real eggs, including pasta shells, potatoes, and clay.
In other videos, influencers decorate egg-shaped cakes, color marshmallows, and paint rocks.
Craft retailer Michaels said its egg-making kits are flying off the shelves, with sales of two kits up 20 percent compared to the same period last year.

Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, has been selling plastic eggs for years. Some options for shoppers include a box of 12 plastic eggs, which includes four packets of liquid dye and four egg dye packets, as well as Play-Doh Easter eggs.
And of course, some people find their own solutions online. Potatoes seem to be especially popular.
In a TikTok video set to the song "It's the Hard Knock Life" from the musical "Annie," a mom places a bag of potatoes in her grocery cart and then shows her kids coloring it with markers.
"Baby or new potatoes are shaped like eggs and are so much fun to look at! So let's color some potatoes for Easter!" writes Rose Atwater on her website Rose Bakes.
"Eggs are too expensive right now," food bloggers Crowded Kitchen explain in a video about peanut butter eggs that has racked up more than a million likes on Instagram.
“I actually had more fun dyeing the marshmallows than the eggs,” admits influencer Rachel Anderson in a popular Instagram video of her dipping a large marshmallow into food coloring and then placing it on a plate.
Record high prices
The March record for a dozen of $6,23 was up from about $5,90 in February and about $4,95 in January.
By comparison, the average retail price for a dozen eggs in Canada in February was approximately $3,50.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said the overall food price index rose 0,4 percent in March, including a 5,9 percent increase for eggs. Over the past 12 months, the price index for eggs has risen 60,4 percent.
