New Jersey couple arrested for cheating immigrants

New Jersey police in the city of Trenton detained a couple who lured male migrants to an abandoned house, where they were beaten and robbed, writes Newsweek.

According to police, 20-year-old Sarah Rodriguez seemed a prostitute, offered sexual services to men, brought them to an abandoned house, which was located on Carroll Street near the federal court building.

Once in place, men did not receive the promised intimacy. They were met by the girl's boyfriend, 32-year-old Marcus Lee, who beat and robbed men.

The couple chose men from Central and South America as victims, believing that they were less likely to report a crime to the authorities. Police believe the couple committed more crimes than they know, but many victims did not report the incident, fearing deportation.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, immigrants are more reluctant to report that they have been victims of crime, as they are afraid of close attention from the police and possible deportation. The police say that because the victims are afraid of deportation, it is difficult for them to investigate serious crimes.

The authors of the study say that this concern has intensified after a series of reports about the detention of illegal migrants after appeals to the court on issues not related to their migration status.

Trenton City Police are asking all victims Rodriguez and Lee to get in touch by calling 609-989-4181. The criminals are now in custody, they are accused of robbery, crimes with the use of weapons, kidnapping and aggravated assault.
