California couple helps homeless man find family after 20 years of separation

A homeless man reunited with his family 20 years after a kind woman heard his heartbreaking request and, together with her boyfriend, helped him find loved ones. Mirror.

Randi Emans-Bailin was walking her dog near her home when she came across a homeless man. The man, Franklin, was muttering to himself when she spotted him—and what she heard was heartbreaking.

He could not understand why people passing by him mock him and look down on him.

“Why do people just stand and stare at me or laugh at me? - he asked out loud. — I am an extremely educated person. Say hi to me. Don’t ignore me or look at me like that.”

Saddened by his words, Randi contacted her boyfriend John Suazo to see how they could help—and what they did changed Franklin's life forever.

Since starting Project Backpack in 2014, helping the homeless in Los Angeles, Randy has known what to do in such cases.

The couple handed him one of the backpacks they offer to the homeless in the city. It was full of food, as well as water, socks and other necessities.

While talking to Franklin, Randy and John learned more about his life - thus they learned that he had not seen his family for 20 years.

Hearing this, they immediately set to work: looking for contacts, calling, trying to reunite relatives.

The couple soon contacted Franklin's uncle, who had flown to Los Angeles to take his nephew home.

Sharing the story on Instagram, Randi said, “Franklin was homeless near our house. He is so smart and kind and all he wanted was to be reunited with his family. John and I searched online and John was able to find a family member's phone number."

“He and his family have not spoken for over 20 years. As soon as we told them we had found him, they said they would come because they too had been looking for him for the last 20 years,” she continued. “We raised money and put him in a hotel, bought fresh clothes and shoes, food and other essentials.”

After Franklin's successful reunion with the family, Randy urged others not to do so to make the homeless feel invisible.
