A couple from California miraculously survived in a fire, hiding behind a boulder
A couple from the Paradise campus completely destroyed by fire is recovering from third-degree burns in the intensive care unit of UC Davis Hospital.
They miraculously managed to survive a raging fire, writes ABC 10.
When the fire began to approach the November 8 Paradise, Paul and Suzy Ernest attempted to urgently evacuate, but it was too late and they had to turn around. Together with their neighbor Travis Wright, they boarded quad bikes and drove to a nearby field, where they decided to hide behind a boulder. When the fire approached their shelter, Wright heard the couple screaming.
“I heard Paul and Susie screaming and I knew it was very bad. It was a terrible, terrible sound,” Wright said.
Paul Ernest tried to protect his wife from the elements, covering her with his body. However, they both received third-degree burns.
“They were on fire. My mother's shoes were burned, my father's leather shoes were burned. Their pants were also burned from the knees down," said the couple's son, Jesse Ernest.
After the fire went on, Wright was able to sit on one of the ATVs and inform the rescuers who arrived at the scene. They managed to rescue Ernestov and took them to the helipad, from where a couple were taken to the hospital by helicopter.
“These guys are heroes. They jumped on my ATV and drove straight into the fire,” Wright said about the rescuers.
"But I knew I had to get Paul and Susie out of there because they couldn't walk," the neighbor added.
Despite severe burns, the couple's condition is assessed as good, they will remain in the hospital for about the next two months.
After the restoration, they will also have to rebuild their house, since their housing has completely burned down in a fire. During the evacuation, they took a few tomatoes with them, now they plan to use their seeds to create a small garden in their new home.
Recall fires in California have already killed at least 48 people, thousands of houses burned down, including the mansions of Hollywood celebrities.
