House supports impeachment of trump

The US House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump, writes “Radio Liberty«.

Voting took place separately on each article of accusation against the president. Both articles - abuse of power and obstruction of the work of Congress - were supported by the majority of parliamentarians. The impeachment case will now be sent to the Senate for further investigation.

Impeachment is the U.S. Constitution's procedure for removing a president from office for committing “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Nominated against Trump two charges - abuse of power and obstruction of Congressional investigation. If the House of Representatives votes in favor of the allegations, Trump will become the third president in US history to be impeached.

True, the announcement of impeachment to the President by the House of Representatives does not mean his removal from office. The Senate will have to confirm the charges with a two-thirds majority. But such a thing in American history has not happened yet (say, President Richard Nixon resigned under the threat of removal from office even before the formal impeachment vote).

The House of Representatives in plenary discussed impeachment for six hours, after which a vote took place.

Democrats, Trump's opponents and impeachment initiators have a majority in the House of Representatives, and both charges against Trump have been accepted. That impeachment so far has been supported only by Democratic lawmakers is one of Trump’s supporters who argues that it is about the revenge of the Democrats on the president and not compliance with the law.

What Trump is accused of

Investigation of a possible impeachment of trump started in September, after an intelligence officer whose name has not yet been officially named, wrote a complaint the pressure that the president, according to him, exerted on Ukraine in order to harm his potential rival in the 2020 elections, Democrat Joe Biden. The accusations against Trump are based on the fact that the military aid to Ukraine was frozen this summer and on the testimony of a number of witnesses that the president, directly and through proxies, sought Kiev to investigate the activities of Biden’s son in Ukraine, as well as Ukraine’s alleged interference in the US elections in 2016 year. The accusation of obstructing Congress activity is due to the fact that the White House has banned the testimony of high-ranking civil servants and the provision of documents related to the investigation.

The Republicans and Trump himself all this time claim that the president has not violated any laws. They deny the connection of freezing aid with requests to investigate the Biden case, and they call these requests themselves the incentive of Ukraine to fight corruption (Biden's son was a member of the board of directors of the Ukrainian corporation Burisma). Trump refers to the words of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, who said that he did not feel any pressure. He calls the impeachment attempt politically motivated.

The Senate will begin the process of removing Trump from office immediately after the New Year. It is not clear what rules he will follow. Republicans have a majority in the Senate, and most commentators find it highly implausible that the Senate will remove the president from office.

Surveys show that Americans on the issue of impeachment are roughly divided in half.
