Louisiana governor signs abortion law after sixth week
In Louisiana, State Governor John Bel Edwards signed a bill that prohibits women from having an abortion after detecting a baby’s heartbeat, in almost all cases.

Edwards urged his party colleagues to do the same, publishing a statement saying: "I call the vast majority of bipartisan lawmakers who voted for him to join me in creating a better Louisiana that provides more opportunities for all of us."
Fetal heartbeat is detected already in the sixth week of pregnancy, even before women learn that they are pregnant. Exceptions include cases where the mother’s health is threatened or the child is already dead.

The bill requires an ultrasound scan to confirm pregnancy and makes no exceptions for women who are victims of rape or incest.
Many Democrats attacked the governor, accusing him of “turning away from the women of Louisiana by signing this shameful bill.”
As a result, Louisiana became the fifth state after Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio to adopt brutal abortion laws.
Representatives of the State Democratic Party of America say that the decision is illegal because it violates the US Supreme Court ruling on human rights, which legalized the abortion in 1973.
They suggest that the law will be successfully challenged in court.
But some Republicans say that the purpose of making such tough bans on abortions is precisely the desire of judicial reviews of these decisions, which may be able to cancel or change the precedent set in the 1973 year.

US President Donald Trump also opposes abortion and calls their restriction a priority for the Republican party.
Louisiana law will not enter into force until the federal court leaves the similar law in Mississippi in force.
Recall that the state of New York introduced new legislative measures to protect the right to abortion. The new law, signed by the governor of the state Andrew Cuomo, has a provision that allows abortion in late periods if the woman’s health is threatened.
