Billionaire Vacations: Where Rich People Spend the Holidays

Some of the world's richest people choose to spend Christmas at home, but often not at their main residence, reports Insider.

Whether it's a ranch in Wyoming or a beach mansion on Martha's Vineyard, they're looking to get into their biggest abode, said Nicole Pollard Baym, founder of luxury styling and shopping firm LaLaLuxe.

“A lot of people build big homes in Aspen for this reason—so the whole family can spend time together,” she said.

Where do billionaires spend their holidays?

The Colorado ski resort has the highest density of wealthy individuals in the U.S. with a net worth of $30 million or more, with one for every 67 residents, according to Wealth-X. Billionaires such as Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell have been spotted there.

Other popular ski resorts in the U.S. include Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada and Vail in Colorado, said Winston Chesterfield, founder of Barton, a consulting firm specializing in the luxury and wealthy.

In Europe - Gstaad and Verbier in Switzerland, Kitzbühel in Austria, famous for its annual ski races, and Courchevel in the French Alps. The latter is known to have hosted VIPs such as David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“They like to go to places that have an established city with established places that are elite,” Chesterfield said of the super-rich. There is a branch of the Japanese restaurant Zuma in Kitzbühel, and a branch of the luxury hotel Cheval Blanc in Courchevel.

For those who prefer the warmth or want to spend a week on the beach, the Caribbean remains a popular destination, both by land and sea.

St. Barts, a particularly popular New Year's Eve destination, has hosted Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez, and yachts owned by billionaires David Geffen, Sergey Brin, Bernard Arnault and Barry Diller and his wife Diane von Furstenberg have been spotted off its shores.
Others choose a specific resort and flock there year after year.

“They don’t want to do anything,” Chesterfield said. “They want to be served, they want to be taken care of.”

Jumby Bay, a resort in Antigua, has the homes of Oprah Winfrey and Richard Branson. These places are very popular. Rooms there start at $2700 a night, although billionaires are likely to splurge on a $13-per-night villa. Another popular option is the Aman Hotel in the Dominican Republic, where rooms range from $300 to $2900 per night.

Africa is a popular destination for both couples and families, said Elizabeth Brown, account manager at New York-based concierge company Knightsbridge.

The wealthy rent private villas in reserves such as Ol Jogi in Kenya and Saanane Island National Park in Tanzania, which can cost up to $40 a night.
