Can the announcement of the absence of values in the car to protect against its hacking
In San Francisco, where none of the cars parked on the street are insured against theft or theft of things inside, there are car owners who leave a note to potential thieves that there are no values inside. Thus, car owners hope that the thief will read it and decide to hack another car.
User Reddit posted a photo of such a message and asked the question “Do you think this helps?” to the community Reddit. After that, lively debates began.
User Maddox83a was skeptical about this method, writing: “it sounds like someone else will write that he has some values in the car”.
But iamthewaffler did not agree, citing personal experience:
“This is a strong message and works VERY well,” wrote a commenter. “If you go to the trouble of printing out a message and putting it on your window, it shows that you know exactly what area you are in and the chances of finding anything valuable in your car are extremely low.”
One thing is for sure, car break-ins in San Francisco are no joke. According to SFPD reports this year, 85 vehicle windows were broken each day in the city. This only includes vehicles whose owners reported the crime. The actual figure is undoubtedly higher.
This year, from 1 January to 31, a total of 17 970 vehicle hacks were recorded, which is 28% more than during the same period of the year 2016.
In August, a police special operation liquidated a whole group of people who smashed windows and stole cars.
Multiple users Reddit suggested that car owners simply leave the car doors unlocked. But this led to homeless people sleeping in vehicles at night, or having sex in them, and even using the rear seats as a toilet.
This is what users recommend Reddit:
- keep the interior and exterior cluttered to discourage the desire to steal anything;
— place cardboard on the carpet or leave some boxes on the folded seats;
— open the glove compartment and other storage areas;
— give up your car and use the services Lyft or Uber.
One userReddit said he tried unsuccessfully to leave a message for thieves. He wrote that in the past 30 months his car had been hacked 10 times.
William Gee, an insurance agent with AAA in San Francisco, said the best protection against break-ins is to carry insurance with a low deductible - $50 or $100.
