From a policeman to a millionaire: how a Kazakhstani created a business in the USA with a monthly turnover of $ 2 million

Akzhol Zhumagulov moved to the US from Kazakhstan in 2019 and created a business with a monthly turnover of $ 2 million. How did he manage to put together a profitable business in such a short time, reports Forbes.

Career in Kazakhstan

Akzhol Zhumagulov was born in the north of Kazakhstan, worked in law enforcement for a long time, but in 2019 he decided to drastically change his life and move to the United States. And I didn't guess. Today, the 30-year-old businessman lives in Los Angeles, has moving companies, a fleet of heavy trucks and trucks, and the monthly turnover of his business reaches almost $2 million.

Akzhol was born in Zerenda, near the city of Kokshetau, in the north of the country. Then he and his parents moved to the Zhanaarka settlement.

Until the age of six, he grew up there, then the family moved to Karaganda, and then returned to Kokshetau. Akzhol studied at the Kazakh-Turkish Lyceum in Kokshetau; during his school years he was the president of the school, an avid activist. He even won the international Olympiad in Budapest in world history, and after that he received the title of candidate master of sports in boxing.

Shortly after graduating from KTL, he entered the Academy of the Financial Police, where he was an assistant head of the course and participated in all sports competitions. In 2014, the financial police was abolished, so after graduating from the academy, Akzhol worked as an investigator in the internal affairs bodies in the city of Stepnyak, then in Kokshetau. In 2016, he decided to enter the National Anti-Corruption Bureau in the same place, in Kokshetau. After two years of hard work, Akzhol received an extraordinary promotion from an investigator to a senior investigator for particularly important cases.

However, he always had thoughts about the United States in his head, and, as Akzhol says, he looked for any opportunity to go there.

“The idea of ​​leaving was also fueled by the fact that two of my fellow students from financial police left for Los Angeles under the Bolashak program, and when we talked, they always invited me to join them,” says Akzhol.

Moving and working as a loader

Akzhol first came to the US in 2019. He came to the USA for language courses, with the further goal of entering the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). In parallel, Akzhol began working as a loader (mover).

“I saw how everything works from the inside, and here I decided to get a license and then became a truck driver, gained some experience in filling out contracts and communicating with clients. In general, every time I came to work, I enjoyed communicating with clients. This work became more and more interesting for me, and I decided not to go anywhere, but to start my own business. I was also captivated by the fact that many of our compatriots at that time were engaged in this business in the USA, they explained to me in their fingers what, where and how to buy. I registered my own company in January 2020 and bought my first truck in March of the same year. Soon they started buying more trucks – two or three each,” says Akzhol.

Financial start

Akzhol bought his first truck with his own funds. When he was leaving Kazakhstan, he sold his car. In addition, he had savings, he had enough of his own funds for the first truck. As he says, then he started doing business and realized that he needed more money. “I had to sell an apartment in Kokshetau, I also borrowed money from friends.

Actually, thanks to this, money appeared that could be invested in “turnover” and ensure the functioning of the business. Then demand began to appear, everyone began to know about us,” says Akzhol.

“We are engaged in moving, that is, we help people pack their things, furniture and transport them from one point to another. We work not only with individuals, but also with large companies, we can travel between states,” says Akzhol. — In fact, at the beginning, when I was here alone and taking language courses, I spent about $2 thousand a month on myself. Then, when my family moved, we began to live on $4 thousand. We lived in a disadvantaged area. I drove a car that cost $3 thousand. We lived very modestly and limited ourselves in many ways. We never spent more; whatever I earned above the norm, I saved. After selling my apartment in Kokshetau, I invested everything in trucks. So incrementally - the more trucks I got, the faster I could buy new ones. When we had 9 tracks, I could easily buy two additional new ones a month.”

The essence of business

Today, Akzhol's monthly business turnover is $1,8 million. He says that sometimes it can be a little more or less, it all depends on the season. In addition, he has shares in the companies of his friends, these are his compatriots who came to the United States.

Akzhol helped them settle into the country and, most importantly, open their own moving business. “I bought them a truck, explained how everything works, and today 70% of their net income goes to me. I have five such companies,” says Akzhol.

He notes that the popularity of his company in the state and in the city itself was due to the quality of service and simply conscientious work. In the moving business, everything is simple, as Akzhol says, if you have done your job well, the client is guaranteed to return to you again. His company has been on the market for a year, now, as he notes, marketing is easier, the company has a lot of positive reviews. Thanks to monthly investments in marketing, the company is growing without stopping. The company spends about $100 a month on marketing alone. Akzhol notes that there are minor difficulties, such as an increase in the cost of fuel, but this is not so critical, given the scale. His company is one of the top 10 moving companies in California.

Plans for the future

Akzhol speaks unequivocally about his plans - to scale up in the USA.

“I want to boost the companies of my friends, in which I invested, so that they grow to my level, and their turnover exceeds $1 million. To do this, we need to expand to other states, expand our fleet, and hire new employees,” he says.

Now Akzhola company covers four locations: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago. In the near future they are launched in Boston, in the summer they go to Texas. Akzhol says that he will continue to help his compatriots.

“If I see that a person is adequate, respectable, active and wants to develop, I will always support him, invest and give him the opportunity to grow,” he says.
