There was a mistake: in Russia, a photo of an American actor who played him in 'Chernobyl' was placed on a commemorative plate of a famous chemist

In the Shakhtar boarding house, located in the Aleksinsky district of the Tula region, a sign was seen on one of the houses depicting the British actor Jared Harris with the caption “Plot named after V. A. Legasov,” reports Фокус.

She drew attention to the obvious mistake and published a post on Facebook, where she asked the question of how the photograph of the actor Harris, who played Legasov in the Chernobyl series, was signed with the name of the famous nuclear chemist.

“Why is there a photo of the no less famous, but still not an academician, but actor Jared Harris on the sign of the site named after our famous academician Valery Legasov?” - asks Afanasyeva.

Apparently the authors of the sign were unable to find a photo of the outstanding Soviet scientist, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Valery Legasov, and instead placed a photo of the British actor from the HBO mini-series “Chernobyl”.

“By simply googling the last name, you can easily find Legasov’s biography and photo in the search. Was it necessary to rush or I don’t know how to look to get a photo of the actor who played him?” — Afanasyeva asks another question.

The woman suggests that if Hollywood actor Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt had played Valery Legasov in the series, the difference would not have been noticed either.

Who was Valery Legasov?

Valery Alekseevich Legasov graduated from the Institute of Atomic Energy named after Igor Kurchatov, where he also completed postgraduate studies. Five years after graduation, he became a candidate of chemical sciences, and ten years later - a doctor. Thanks to his work, a huge contribution was made to the development of the chemistry of noble gas compounds - his surname is next to the founder of the discipline, Neil Bartlett, and named after them Bartlett-Legasov effect.

During the Chernobyl accident in 1986, Legasov was a member of the government commission to investigate the causes and eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. On his initiative, during the liquidation of the consequences of the accident, boron carbide was used, which coped with radionuclides. He also insisted on the evacuation of the population beyond the 30-kilometer zone.

In total, Legasov worked at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant for 4 months in the immediate vicinity of the reactor, after which he began to show symptoms of radiation sickness.

Despite the titanic work at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the Soviet leadership did not take into account Legasov’s merits, and he was removed from the list of those nominated for awards for liquidation due to his excessive “frankness” in assessing the work of the RBMK-1000 reactor.

In April 1988, on the eve of the second anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, he was found hanged in his own apartment. Having recorded his memories of the events at the station on five audio cassettes, he committed suicide.
