Survey: how do countries around the world treat Trump and the USA

US President Donald Trump is a very controversial figure, and the attitude towards him in the US is quite ambiguous. But how is he perceived abroad? The publication found this out with the BBC.

The US Pew Research Center has published the results of its latest survey, which shows how the world relates to Donald Trump.

Between May and October 2019, the Pew Research Center (a non-profit independent public organization) interviewed nearly 37 people in 000 countries.

The survey was conducted before the US president gave the order to kill Iranian general Kassem Suleimani.

What is Trump's attitude

Only 29% of the countries surveyed by the Pew Research Center supported Trump's policy development initially in 2017.

The research center notes that this mistrust is partly the result of dissatisfaction with the president's foreign policy.

The US president’s position on tariffs, climate, immigration and Iran is not supported around the world.

His talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un received more positive reviews: 41% in 33 countries surveyed.

And in the USA

According to the Pew Research Center, in contrast to the attitude towards Donald Trump, the attitude of the world towards the United States remains positive. But compared to the Obama presidency, the image of the United States has deteriorated dramatically when Trump took office.

However, the US ranking rose in 2019, which the think tank said was “driven, at least in part, by increased popularity among supporters of right-wing populist groups in some countries.”

According to the survey, Israel has the best attitude towards the United States - 83%.

In Mexico, the Middle East, and North Africa, attitudes toward the United States are generally negative. In Turkey, only one in five declared US support.

Trump vs. other leaders

Researchers at the Pew Research Center note that none of the five world leaders received a high rating.

However, German Chancellor Angela Merkel enjoys the most confidence from respondents.

Donald Trump has the lowest confidence rating, although the attitude towards the presidents of China and Russia is also negative.

“Donald Trump is most liked by right-wing supporters, but even among them, trust in the current US president is slightly above 50% in only six countries,” the report says.

Which countries love Trump the most?

Trump's foreign policy does not have general support in the world, but there are countries where he is perceived positively.

For example, in Africa his rating remains high, despite the fact that Trump called the countries of this continent “stinking holes.”

Kenya and Nigeria, which have positive views of Donald Trump, are among the top recipients of US economic assistance, according to the Security Assistance Monitor. Pew Research Center researchers note that sub-Saharan Africa also sympathizes with the US president.

Trump's support in the Philippines is less surprising, given that previously the US president praised his Filipino counterpart Rodrigo Duterte for the way he fights drugs in his country.

After Duterte came to power in 2016, he launched a massive anti-drug campaign. Critics say human rights are being violated en masse in raids and other special operations.

Donald Trump is well treated in Israel. The President of the United States has close relations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the United States has long supported Israel.

The Trump administration went even further in this support by moving the US embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
