20 million Americans raise funds online to pay medical bills

GoFundMe positions itself as a “leader in the collection of medical devices on the Internet”: 250 medical campaigns are launched every year on the site.

“I really wish there wasn’t a medical category on GoFundMe,” said the website’s CEO Rob Solomon.

“However, the reality is that access to health care is linked to the ability to pay for it. If you can't do that, people die. People are suffering. We are glad that our platform exists and helps people,” he added.

A NORC survey found that 85% of respondents believed that the government should be held accountable for providing care when medical care is unavailable. 83% said the same thing about hospitals or clinics.

The survey was conducted from November 8 to November 16, 2019 and included 1020 interviews with a representative sample of the country. The error is 4%.
