Life-threatening bacteria: popular products recalled from US stores

You might want to take another look at the packaging of fresh products in your refrigerator before preparing dinner tonight.

Mann Packaging Co., a division of Fresh Del Monte Produce, recalls more than 140 vegetable products sold in supermarkets throughout the United States due to fears of being infected with Listeria, writes SF Gate. As reported on the official website World Health Organization, listeriosis is associated with high mortality, although it is a fairly rare disease.

The Mann brand can be found in supermarkets such as Safeway, Whole Foods and Target. The brand's plant products are also sold under private labels, including Trader Joe's, Kroger and Safeway's Signature Farms, as well as O Organics.

Products include broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, Brussels sprouts, green beans, as well as vegetarian mixes and bowls. Mann Packing has released a complete list of all the products that are included in the recall that you can find. here.

The recalled products have a "Best If Enjoyed By" date from October 11, 2019 to November 16, 2019. Consumers who have purchased products from these lots are strongly advised to discard them. The recall was made voluntarily "out of an abundance of caution" after notifying the Food and Drug Administration of the possible contamination, the company said in a press release.

So far, no diseases associated with these products have been officially registered.

“Another large-scale recall concerned King Arthur Flour flour - more precisely, the product recall was expanded due to fears of possible contamination with E. coli,” writes CBS News. This applies to some batches of unbleached universal flour in packages of 5 and 25 pounds.

The company said that three additional batch codes with 5-pound packets of unbleached general purpose flour should have been included in the recall, according to a notice issued by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The recall includes packages with a “Best Used by Date” expiration date until December 9, 2019, with lot codes L18A09A and L18A09C and packages with a “Best Used by Date” expiration date until January 8, 2020, with a lot code: A19A08A (full list below. )

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in July that the outbreak of E. coli associated with flour had ended, but added that the recalled flour products had a long shelf life and could still be in American homes.

“Consumers who are unaware of the recall may continue to eat the products and become sick,” the CDC said.

According to the CDC, in the 9 states, 21 people fell ill then, three were hospitalized.

Shredded King Arthur Flour flour at ADM Milling in Buffalo, New York, was sold by retailers and distributors throughout the country, as well as through the company's website, catalog, and store in Norwich, Vermont, the company said. (to see the full list of products, click here).

Consumers must refuse the recalled product and file claims for a refund or exchange of flour here, or by calling King Arthur Flour at 866-797-9178.

The CDC said an outbreak of Escherichia coli was associated with four separate flour-related recalls. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, this particular strain includes E. coli 026, a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. Seniors, children and people with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable to foodborne illnesses.
