Life-threatening: In 16 Indiana, students were given insulin instead of a tuberculosis test

On September 30, a group of high school students from Indiana ended up in the hospital after teenagers mistakenly received insulin injections during a skin test for tuberculosis at their local high school. A healthy person is strictly not recommended to administer insulin: this can be very dangerous, and in rare cases lead to coma and death.

Students at the McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology in Indianapolis were taken to local hospitals for follow-up after they received “small doses” of insulin, according to Lawrence Metropolitan School District. All 16 were taken to hospitals, accompanied by high school or district staff. Parents are also notified, writes Fox News.

“They could have died, my daughter could have died. So yeah, I'm very angry,” said Lucille Knowles, whose daughter was hospitalized for five hours after she was accidentally injected. - I just want to know how this happened, why you didn’t pay attention... You gave these injections to 16 children. When did you realize it was a mistake? Just getting to the 16th child?”

When insulin is given to a non-diabetic person, depending on the dose size, the person may experience hypoglycemia—a drop in blood sugar to abnormally low levels. This condition causes severe sweating, nervousness, fainting, and convulsions.

If you introduce a large dose at a time, then this is fraught with falling into a hypoglycemic coma and the death of the patient; experimenting in this way is strictly forbidden. The effect of artificial insulin on the body of an ordinary person is not yet fully understood.

County spokeswoman Dana Altemeyer said an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the error and expressed "full confidence that today's events are isolated and will be promptly addressed by the public health network."

It is unclear why the high school students were tested for tuberculosis.

The Health Network community said it is “committed to patient safety and works closely with the Lawrence School District to determine the cause of the error and evaluate the processes.” The health worker added that "the safety of students under our care is a top priority."

The school district website states that it has partnered with the public health network for 8 years.

The president of the Public Network of Doctors John Kunzer said that as of 12: 00 Monday, 30 September, all high school students were in good condition, some were already discharged from the hospital.
