"I was afraid of raising a serial killer": in Michigan, 9-year-old boy shot his mother

A nine-year-old boy from Michigan repeatedly instructed his friends' favorite air pistol shooting metal balls at his friends. One day he opened fire from these weapons at children, but did not hit anyone. His behavior worsened: recently the adoptive mother recorded her son to a psychiatrist, but did not have time to help him. The day before the visit to the doctor, a boy shot and killed an 51-year-old mother from his father's hunting rifle.

According to the authorities, just a day before the appointment at the psychiatric clinic, the boy (due to his age, wasn’t given his name) grabbed one of his father’s hunting rifles, aimed it at his mom and pulled the trigger. Pauline Randal died on the spot, writes Detroit News.

According to family members, Randal told the doctor that she was concerned about what her son’s behavior would lead to.

“She was so scared that she was raising another serial killer,” said Harley Martin, 27, one of the victim’s biological daughters.

The boy is now one of the youngest people ever charged with murder in the United States. The judge ordered him for a psychiatric evaluation, after which authorities will decide what to do with a child of that age who may not have realized that he was doing something terrible.

During the hearing in St. Joseph County Family Court, family members said the boy looked around the courtroom, wondering where his mother was.

According to the law, in Michigan, anyone under the age of 10 is considered incapacitated and cannot be brought to justice. Such children usually do not have sufficient intellectual or emotional abilities to think like adults.

But, according to the National Conference of State Legislative Assemblies, which deals with political issues, Michigan allows prosecutors to act at their discretion when it comes to violent crime.

The locals were shocked by what happened, but those who knew the nine-year-old boy were much less surprised. When one of the neighbors learned that Randal was shot, she immediately suspected her foster son's dead son. The boy’s family says his life has always been hectic.

Randall is the boy's adoptive mother. She began caring for him when he was a child and adopted him three years ago. He was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He appeared to suffer from other mental health problems, family members said. A woman quit her job (she was a nurse) to focus on raising her troubled son.

Her biological children said that Randal was a fun, funny person who was willing to do anything for others.

According to neighbors, the boy sometimes walked on the roadway near his house, squeezing an air pistol in his hand. Once he showed a neighbor Beverly Uitcomb squirrel, which he shot. The woman said that the boy often roamed the neighbors' courtyards at any time of the day or night. He also shot an air pistol at the grandsons of another neighbor, Jenny Lancaster. They shouted at him, knocked on the door of his parents, but no one answered. Fortunately, the children were not injured.

Lancaster said that a child who plays alone in the yard for hours will look for any ways to get more attention.

“I feel sorry for him,” she said. “If you don't get good enough attention, you try to be bad.”

In an elementary school where a boy was studying, one of the parents told the principal that an 9-year-old child threatened to kill his daughter. According to the parent, the school has not taken any steps.

A few weeks ago, the child’s behavior deteriorated. His sisters told that he locked himself in his bedroom, attacked family members with his fists. Harley Martin blames everything on medication. It is known that Randal called public service for mental health and substance abuse, but the child was not taken there because the father’s insurance did not cover the treatment.

The mother wrote about this on Facebook - and she was contacted by Christina Kirsch, executive director of the agency, who asked to call her back and scheduled an appointment for May 7. On May 6, Randol left her son at home without letting him go to school: he was behaving so badly that she could not imagine how the child would spend the day at school.

The family does not know what happened next. They say they do not know where he got the hunting rifle, which was usually kept locked up, and why he shot at their mother.

Randol's body was found in the living room. Today, 13 May, a woman will be buried.

The judge sent the child to a juvenile correctional facility, where he will undergo a psychiatric examination. The family said that during the hearing, he looked frightened and confused.
