The UN is sounding the alarm: more and more immigrants die in the Americas

According to the UN, more than 500 migrants died in the Americas in the 2019 year, which is about 33% more than a year ago. Writes about it ABC News.

Joel Millman, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said the “riots” in Venezuela could be the cause of “a significant increase in mortality in the 2019 year.” More than 4 million people have left Venezuela since the 2015 year.

IOM confirmed the 89 deaths of Venezuelans this year, this figure was second only to 100 people of unknown nationality.

A total of 514 people died this year in the Americas before 14 August, compared to 384 last year. This is the fastest way to reach the 500 mark since MOM began counting the number of deaths.

Millman said that the mortality rate on the border between the US and Mexico has not changed much over the past six years, it still amounts to about one migrant per day.

Overall, just over half of the deaths this year - 259 - were caused by drowning, such as from shipwrecks in the Caribbean or failed attempts to swim across a river. About 65 deaths were road accidents, and about 20 people died on rail routes, from dehydration or violence, including homicide, and illness or lack of medical care.

Millman said the numbers do not include deaths of prisoners, namely: 11 deaths, including 8 in the US and 3 in Mexico.
