The Ukrainian Olympic champion living in the USA lost the trial for $ 50 million

Back in 2015, the former Ukrainian figure skater, Olympic champion Oksana Bayul filed a lawsuit against Ukraine in the Federal Court of the Central District of California. The athlete intended to recover 50 million dollars from her native country. The other day the court ruled in the case of Baiul.

According to the information on the site Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Bayul filed a lawsuit against Ukraine, Joseph Charles Lemire, the Delaware Corporation Olympic Champions Ltd and the Corporation of the British Virgin Islands Olympic Champions Ltd.

“The plaintiff alleged that the defendants violated the principles of fair and honest business practices within the framework of the employment agreement between Oksana Baiul and the specified companies, and also transferred the rights to use her name, popularity and biographical information to uninvolved third parties. At the same time, payment for such use was carried out inappropriately, which resulted in the plaintiff not receiving proper profits. The amount of the stated claims amounted to more than 50 million US dollars,” the Ministry noted.

The court acknowledged that the claimant’s claims are unfounded, and therefore subject to rejection, and thus made a decision in favor of Ukraine, satisfying the state’s request to leave the claim without consideration.

Oksana Baiul - silver medalist of the European Championship and world champion (1993), Olympic champion (1994), two-time champion of Ukraine (1993, 1994) began figure skating at the age of four, and won her first serious victory at the age of sixteen. At the European Championships, having made a serious mistake in her performance technique, Oksana amazed the judges with her artistry and resourcefulness - as a result, she took silver. Having made her debut at the World Championships the same year, Baiul brought Ukraine a gold medal and became famous throughout the world. Her performance to Tchaikovsky's music is still considered one of the best short programs in the history of figure skating.

After the 1994 Olympics, President Leonid Kravchuk invited Oksana, Ukraine's only Olympic champion that year, to be part of the delegation for the US trip. In the same year, together with coach Galina Zmievskaya, the athlete moved to live in the States and received a residence permit. Three years later she found herself at the center of a scandal when she got into a car accident while intoxicated - at the trial she was given a suspended sentence. After undergoing treatment for alcoholism, Oksana returned to professional sports in 2005, published two books, and organized a business.

All this time, she remained a citizen of Ukraine, where she briefly returned to 2010: she began to study coaching at the university, planned to open a school of figure skating, but lived in the country just 4 a month. The conflict with the Ukrainian officials who invited the athlete and Zmiyevskaya’s coach forced Oksana to leave for the United States again. In 2015 in America, Bayul filed several lawsuits, including against Ukraine and personally against Galina Zmiyevskaya.
