About 900 people received American citizenship instead of deportation
The Department of Homeland Security said Monday that around 900 people who were supposed to be deported received citizenship by mistake.
An internal audit by the US Department of Homeland Security revealed that 858 immigrants came from countries that pose a risk to US national security, or countries with a high risk of fraud during immigration documents. About which countries in question, is not specified.
According to the inspector general of the Ministry of Homeland Security, John Roth, immigrants used the wrong names and dates of birth when applying for citizenship. He added that the errors were due to the fact that there were no applicants' fingerprints in the government database.
At least three of the immigrants who mistakenly obtained citizenship were able to use this to get work in areas requiring special security measures, including at commercial airports and at sea facilities. According to the Ministry of Internal Security, all three of them had their respective certificates withdrawn.
