A huge wave covered Hawaii: washed away the wedding, flooded houses and streets

Huge waves hit Hawaii in a "historic" wave; The surf crashed into houses, washed away the wedding party, according to USAToday.

Huge waves hit parts of Hawaii over the weekend and July 17, and the video shows the water crashing into homes, wedding celebrations and more.

Last week, officials predicted a "historic" wave that would bring big waves to Hawaii's southern shores. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources confirmed on July 17 that the Department of Conservation and Resource Conservation had reported a nearly eight-meter wave.

“The highest surf on the South Shore in more than 25 years was achieved as predicted,” the department said in a Facebook post.

And waves from the remnants of Hurricane Darby have continued this week, although Darby intensified into a tropical storm and then into a downpour, according to Accuweather.

The wave "will cause dangerous breaking waves and local flooding of some low-lying areas of the southern coasts of all islands today," the National Weather Service said on July 18.

One video that quickly went viral on social media showed waves crashing into two-story houses in Keuhou-Kona. Isabella Sloan, who filmed the video, told Hawaii News Now that her apartment "was doused for the first time and flooded everything."

Waves also hit Dillon and Riley Murphy's Saturday wedding celebration in Kailua-Kona.

“We were just in there when we were about to start moving a couple things and yeah, this big wall of water just appeared,” Dillon told KHON2. “And luckily there was no food in any of the containers, luckily the cake survived.”

Communities across the state began cleanups on July 17, according to Hawaii News Now, after some businesses and homes were flooded and roads closed due to damage.
