Mississippi city police officer slept with the boss while her child died in the car

On March 18, Cassie Barker, a former police officer from Long Beach, Mississippi, pleaded guilty to manslaughter of her three-year-old daughter. The woman had sex with her boss, and then fell asleep. At this time, the girl left in the patrol car died a painful death.

Prosecutors advised the judge to give 29-year-old Barker a term of about 20 years behind bars, writes CBS News. Harrison County judge Larry Bourgeois said he needed more time to consider the case. The verdict will be read on 1 April.

Cheyenne Heyer died on September 30 2016 of the year after her mother left her in the patrol car, strapped into the car seat. Barker did not return the 4 hour. The car was turned on air conditioning, but cold air did not flow. At this time, Barker had sex with her supervisor, after which she fell asleep.

When the woman returned to the car, the child was already unconscious. Authorities say that Heyer's body temperature was 107 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 42 Celsius) when the child was brought to the nearest hospital.

“I don't know what I could do for you. What could be worse than what you have already experienced... You will forever remain in the prison of your own mind,” the judge told the woman.

Barker was released on bail, but after pleading guilty, 18 was arrested again in March.

She initially claimed that she had a conversation with Clark Ladner at his home and then fell asleep. A few days later, Barker, who was then working two jobs, and Ladner were fired from the police force. The man was not charged - he did not know the girl was in the car. Reports initially indicated that Ladner took a sleeping pill and also fell asleep.

Police said Barker had previously forgotten her daughter in a car in April 2015. Then the child was temporarily taken under the supervision of social services, and Barker was suspended from working in the police for a week without a salary. The girl's father, Ryan Heyer, said he knew nothing about the first incident.

“Every time I close my eyes, I imagine her suffering and then I imagine her laying in that coffin,” Ryan Hyer said Monday. “I can still see her smiling and laughing.” Her smile and laughter turned into pain.”

The father sued the Long Beach police department and the Mississippi Children's Department for the death of his child, claiming that the child welfare agency had to take more drastic measures after the first incident.

“As a parent, you have to protect your child, and Cheyenne died because her mother left her unprotected not once, but twice,” Hyer said.

Barker herself was hospitalized after the death of the girl in a state of shock. Psychological examination showed that a woman suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder associated with her own childhood trauma and the death of her daughter. But she was declared sane in order to stand trial.
