Same-sex couple from Ukraine got married in New York: 'There is a sense of security that has been lacking for 15 years'

Ukrainian LGBT activist Bogdan Globa and his partner Vasily got married in the United States of America on January 30. Bogdan himself came from Ukraine to the USA to 2016 because of threats.

The men met in Kiev, traveled to the United States at different times, writes Hromadske. Bogdan Globa is openly gay, and Vasily does not yet give his last name - “he is not ready yet,” says Bogdan.

Globa stayed in the USA in November 2016. The day before, he organized an advocacy campaign in support of LGBT people in the Kiev subway, after which threats began. The main reason for emigration calls the issue of security.

“We understood that in Ukraine it’s impossible to live a gay family life. I am also openly gay, so it was not only me who was in danger, ”says Globa.

The wedding ceremony was held at the City Hall of New York. Several American friends, Ukrainian émigrés came to her, “and, of course, mother came.” Celebrated the official registration of marriage in a cafe.

“We wanted somehow modestly, without a pump. Even, perhaps, on purpose, just to have the feeling that now it is something ordinary. You can come to the city hall with your identification code and sign with your partner without attracting attention, ”says Globa.

He adds that in the US the couple will feel free and is already planning to adopt children - “here it is very simple.”

“You can walk by the hand on the street, kiss, hug. And it is impossible to convey the feeling that you can absolutely freely take the hand of your partner and walk along the street, and they will not even pay attention to you. There is a sense of security that I have missed over the last 15 years, ”says Bogdan Globa.

They do not plan to return to Ukraine yet, Bogdan notes, adding that he is convinced of the need to legalize same-sex marriages in Ukraine.
