One US state offers residents free college tuition in the region

The Governor of New Mexico, Michelle Luhan Grisham, offers to pay for the education of state residents in public colleges with two or four years of study. Writes about it New York Post.

Such a program, the plan of which was developed by the governor, must now be approved by the local parliament.

The state plans to use revenue from its refineries to cover the bulk of the program’s costs. True, it does not provide for living expenses. Students will only be given money after the resources of existing state aid programs and federal grants are exhausted.

In order to be eligible to participate in the program, school graduates must have an average score of at least 2,5 (approximately 3 + on the 5-point scale). The program will be accessible to all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Unlike other states, such as Georgia, where illegal immigrants are not allowed to enter public colleges.

According to the deputy secretary of the New Mexico Department of Higher Education, when the program takes effect, it will help approximately 55 000 students annually, with costs ranging from 25 to 35 million dollars a year.

“We give money directly to students,” Carmen Lopez-Wilson said. “This is the best way to begin rebuilding New Mexico’s higher education infrastructure.”

In the 178 states, including New York, Oregon, and Tennessee, there are programs that provide partial tuition for students.

“This program is a game changer for New Mexico,” Lujan Grisham said. “Over time, we will see economic growth improve.”

Education experts believe that such a development is part of the “tipping point” in higher education.
