'A very strong start': Pence met with Zelensky and conveyed congratulations from Trump

United States Vice President Mike Pence met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Warsaw and conveyed congratulations to him “on a very strong start” from US President Donald Trump. It was previously planned that Trump would personally meet with Zelensky, but the American leader canceled his visit to the Polish capital due to Hurricane Dorian.

United States Vice President Mike Pence said in Warsaw, Poland, at a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that he congratulated the Ukrainian head of state on a “very strong start” on behalf of US President Donald Trump. The briefing was broadcast on Facebook on September 1 by Fox News, writes Gordon.

“I’m very glad to have the opportunity to meet you. I would like to convey congratulations on your very strong start as President of Ukraine from President Donald Trump,” Pence said.

Among the topics of conversation were progress in the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the progress of reforms in Ukraine.

Relations between the United States and Ukraine have never been as strong as they are now, the States will continue to support the Ukrainian people and the territorial integrity of the country. This was stated by Pence before meeting with Zelensky, reports Gordon.

“The relationship between the United States and Ukraine is extremely strong, and we always stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Ukraine. This became especially evident after 2014. We support the territorial integrity of Ukraine and will continue to support the people of Ukraine, particularly on issues of security and territorial integrity, including the issue of Crimea,” Pence said.

“I also look forward to discussing energy and energy resources issues. Our delegation includes the Minister of Energy. We will first of all talk about Ukraine’s energy independence and our possible cooperation in this industry and in the economy as a whole,” the vice president noted.

Pence tweeted two photos and commented on the meeting, calling it “excellent”: “Great meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky to discuss security, energy, economic growth and progress of his reform agenda. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, relations between Ukraine and the United States have never been stronger!”

Pence and Zelensky were invited to events in the capital of Poland, which are timed to coincide with the 80 anniversary of the start of World War II.

It was previously planned that in Warsaw Zelensky will hold a meeting with US President Donald Trump. It was expected that at the meeting the presidents will sign a number of documents, as well as discuss issues of military-technical cooperation and countering Russian aggression in Ukraine.

On August 29, it became known that Trump will not fly to Poland because of the hurricane Dorian, which is approaching Florida. The head of the White House explained that he would remain in Washington and would control the fight against natural disaster. Instead of Trump, it was decided to send Pence to Warsaw.
