Obama suddenly visited a Cuban church in Miami

On Thursday, as part of a campaign to restore relations with Cuba, President Obama made an unplanned visit to the Church of Merciful Our Lady in Miami, Florida, popular among Cuban Americans.

As the White House was informed, the president made an unplanned stop to “pay tribute to Cuban Americans who sacrificed much in the name of freedom, and to celebrate the many things they did for our country.”

The Cuban diaspora of Miami, which has significant political influence, for the most part, does not agree with the decision of the Obama administration to cancel the economic embargo of the Castro government that has been in place for several decades.

However, the four Democratic senators who visited Havana this week state that this decision enjoys increasing support from Congress members, as well as the decision to lift the ban on visiting Cuba by US citizens and promote economic ties with Cuba.

Obama made a historic statement last December when he said that histhe administration will seek to restore diplomatic relations with Cubabroken in 1961 year.

American and Cuban diplomats hold meetings in order to discuss in detail the timing and procedure for opening embassies in the American and Cuban capitals.

Florida is only 145 kilometers from Cuba. The largest city of this state, Miami, has been the final destination for more than 50 years for Cubans who manage to immigrate to the United States.
