Obama halts operations against Hezbollah in favor of Iran nuclear deal

The administration of the 44th US President Barack Obama turned a blind eye to the criminal activities of the terrorist organization Hezbollah, including on the territory of the United States itself, so as not to damage the nuclear deal with Iran that was being prepared at that time.

This conclusion was reached by journalists publications Politico as part of the investigation.

In particular, the Obama administration frustrated a massive operation. Project cassandra, which has been under development by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) since 2008. The operation monitored drug trafficking into the United States by Hezbollah to obtain money for weapons.

The project Cassandra convincing evidence was obtained that Hezbollah had transformed from a military-political organization focused on the Middle East into an international crime syndicate that, according to investigators, controlled billions of dollars in cash flows. According to the investigation, senior Iranian officials were involved in the activities of the organization. Representatives of the security services of many countries were involved in the investigation, since Hezbollah received money through criminal means in the territory of a large number of states.

As the project progresses Cassandra the Obama administration realized what scandal the publication of the investigation report might lead to, so the project began to put poles into the wheels. The leaders of the DEA began to refuse to sanction the conduct of certain operational actions; the financing of operations was frozen, and the documents requiring approval by the administration were delayed for a long time in the offices.

The Justice Department has repeatedly denied the DEA's requests to bring criminal charges against people involved in the investigation. Among them were a high-ranking Hezbollah envoy in Tehran, the head of the Lebanese bank through which the money was laundered, an Iranian army general and others.

After taking office as president, Obama headed for rapprochement with the Islamic world, including Iran, which was engaged in the development of nuclear weapons, which complicated the country's relations with Western countries.

Back during his election campaign, Obama criticized George W. Bush for aggressive rhetoric against Tehran, which, according to Obama, only inflamed passions, and did not help solve the problem.

Advisers recommended that Obama go even further - while involving Iran in a peaceful settlement of the nuclear problem, begin a new course towards Hezbollah, trying to turn it from a terrorist organization into a political one.

These calls were supported by reports from the CIA, whose experts also found signs of “perestroika” in Hezbollah.

However, the data obtained within Project cassandra, contradicted these optimistic views. The investigation caught Hezbollah in drug trafficking, racketeering, money laundering and illicit arms trafficking, including in the United States.

In the end, shortly after the agreement with Iran Project cassandra was finally closed. All employees who participated in the investigation were distributed to other structures.
