About Trump, Biden, Crimea and NATO: Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave an interview to HBO

What does Zelenskiy want to hear from Biden?

The President of Ukraine said in an interview that he would like to hear from Biden that Ukraine will become a NATO member under him.

“For me, the first question would be: “Mr. President, why are we still not in NATO?” Zelensky presented his first conversation with President Biden, in response to a journalist’s question about what kind of help Ukraine needs from the United States.

“I believe that the answer may sound like this: “Mr. President, we feel Ukraine as a strategic partner. We understand that Ukraine today actually has a powerful army in Europe and protects not only Ukrainian citizens, but also European ones in the east of the country. Therefore, under my presidency, Ukraine should be in NATO.”

Zelensky noted that Biden's answer may be different, but it is desirable that they speak honestly with Ukraine.

“If Ukraine were in NATO, there would be no escalation in eastern Ukraine,” the president noted.

'A little' angry at Trump

The conversation repeatedly raised the topic of Donald Trump's conversation with Zelensky in July 2019, in which the then US President recalled the investigation in Ukraine against Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden.

Trump was then accused of putting pressure on the Ukrainian president to find dirt on his future election rival in exchange for economic and military aid to Ukraine, which the US president froze.

In the end, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Trump, and the Senate acquitted him.

“You're mad at Trump. Perhaps a little, eh? - asked the journalist.

“A little,” Zelensky replied and laughed.

“Trump did not put pressure on me, and I will never say that. Because we are talking about the president. “I’m not just a citizen,” the President of Ukraine noted.

In the conversation, Zelensky recalled that he wants to return the issue of Crimea to the international agenda.

“When I arrived at the first meeting of the Normandy format, I didn’t understand why we weren’t talking about Crimea. All partners said that Crimea is not an agenda (agenda - Ed.). And this was an agreement with the former president (Poroshenko - Ed.),” Zelensky noted.

He also said that if he was president in 2014, the loss of Crimea would not have happened.

“If I had been president then, we would all have died there in Crimea, but we would not have allowed the “little green men” there. And if the “little green men” had not been allowed there, then Russia would not have helped the separatists and would not have been in eastern Ukraine,” he noted.

China is not a threat, but Motor Sich will not receive

Commenting on the confrontation between the United States and China, Zelensky noted that Ukraine does not feel the threat of China.

“We know that the United States is represented in Ukraine, business is represented, but we also have Chinese business represented. I believe that regardless of nationality, if people, businesses, a certain country respects you, respects your people and your borders, they can be present in your country,” the president said.

At the same time, he noted that he would not allow any foreign company or state to establish control over the Ukrainian enterprise for the production of Motor Sich engines.

“The issue is not China. The question is that we do not have the right to sell a controlling stake in the management of strategic defense enterprises of Ukraine to any country. Never, at least in front of me - I’m not for life, I’m not the general secretary. This definitely won’t happen in my time,” Zelensky promised.

In January 2021, Ukraine, following the United States, imposed sanctions against Chinese citizen Wang Jing and a number of Chinese companies that are trying to gain control over the enterprise together with DCH company Alexander Yaroslavsky. They previously filed a claim against Ukraine for $ 3,5 billion in international arbitration.
