What people dissatisfied with when building a career in the USA: 10 main regrets

People devote approximately a third of their lives to work. Looking back, they often realize that there are aspects of their career path they would like to change. Resume writing service Zety surveyed more than a thousand participants about their biggest career regrets. The results of the survey were shared by the publication Devby.

The most common regret among survey participants was lack of initiative. The second most common manifestation was the lack of mentoring support. In addition, the list of ten regrets that respondents wish they could change but it was too late included: not being afraid to pursue opportunities, strengthening their professional network, and deciding to leave an undesirable job. Interestingly, only 2% of respondents expressed complete satisfaction with their career.

Top 10 career regrets:

1. Failure to show sufficient initiative
2. Lack of mentoring support
3. Excessive caution/Fear of taking advantage of opportunities
4. Not strengthening your professional network
5. Unwillingness to quit a job you don't like
6. Insufficient effort put into the issue of promotion
7. Lack of focus on career improvement
8. Poor network communication
9. Indecisiveness about higher starting salary
10. Poor focus on university/school studies

The top 3 biggest career regrets varied by gender. For women, the top 3 were: don't talk about problems, don't ask for a higher starting salary, and work in an industry where they don't earn enough. For men, the picture is different: don’t work harder, don’t expand your professional network, and don’t show more initiative.

As for the fear of risk (78% of respondents express regret about it), most often people realize that they did not dare to listen to their inner urge and do what really inspires them. Many of them regret that they did not risk asking for a higher salary or bonus, did not take up their studies again, or did not dare to open their own business.
